Blown Fiberglass
Radiant Barrier
What is Radiant Barrier?
Radiant barriers are materials installed in buildings, new and old alike, to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss.  R-Energy installs radiant barrier to the decking, truss chords and rafters of your attic by the way of a latex spray-on substance.  Our choice of product is called Lo-MIT II.  Please visit http://www.solec.org/LOMITframe.htm for additional information on this product.

Why Should You Install Radiant Barrier?
Radiant barriers work by reducing heat transfer by thermal radiation across the air space between the roof deck and attic floor.  Solar energy is absorbed by a roof, heating the roof sheathing which causes the underside of a roof to radiate heat downward to the attic floor and the ceilings of your home.  When this radiant heat penetrates your attic space and passes through your ceilings your home will require increased cooling loads to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature.  To maintain these types air temperatures requires an increase of energy consumption by your air conditioning system.

What can you expect from Radiant Barrier?
Radiant barriers will offer you the following benefits:
  • More comfortable living space
  • Lowered utility costs by as much as 11%
  • Increased life expectancy of your heating and air conditioning equipment
  • Peace of mind!
What is Attic Insulation?
Attic insulation comes in various forms including faced/unfaced batt, rolls, loose-fill, rigid foam boards, blown and foam.  Each type is manufactured differently and made for different uses within a home.  The amount of insulation required is based on the Department of Energy's zone chart.  In the city of Austin the required amount is an R-38 value.  Austin is located in Zone 4 (see below).  This “R” value is a measure for the amount of energy efficiency your insulation will contain.  R-Energy strongly advocates the proper use of insulation to make your home energy efficient.

Why proper levels of attic insulation important?
Having the correct levels of insulation can have many benefits including:
  • Reduction of pollutants like sulfur oxide, nitrous oxide and fine particle matter.
  • Increased health benefits, i.e. respiratory and cardiovascular aliments associated with air pollution and premature deaths.
  • Reduction in energy usage and emissions
  • Elongating the life of your heating and air conditioning equipment
